Can your asthma symptoms be affected by what you eat? Although studies have not been definitive, there are several things that are known to trigger asthma symptoms, and one of these triggers is food. The question is, which foods in particular can benefit or trigger your asthma symptoms?

Here is a list of good and bad food choices for people with asthma:


  • Carrots: Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant, which converts into vitamin A when consumed. Vitamin A is beneficial for you, since it reduces incidence of exercise-induced asthma. Also, carrots can help maintain a healthy immune system.
  • Flax seeds: High in omega-3, fatty acids, and magnesium, flax seeds can have a beneficial effect on asthma. Omega-3 is also found in foods like salmon and other oily fish. Magnesium can help relax the muscles around the bronchi and the airways, which helps to keep them open and prevent asthma symptoms.
  • Garlic: The anti-inflammatory properties of garlic can be an ideal remedy for several different health conditions, and one of them is asthma. Why? Garlic contains allicin, a powerful antioxidant, which produces an acid that destroys free radicals.
  • Avocado: Avocados contain glutathione, an antioxidant which helps protect our body cells against the damage inflicted by free radicals.


  • Salt: One of the basic hallmark feature of asthma is inflammation. Salt is often responsible for inflammation due to fluid retention. You might want to avoid salty foods.
  • Peanuts: According to experts, peanuts are often responsible for allergic reactions and allergic asthma attacks.
  • Eggs: Egg allergies are very common in children. This means that if your child is allergic to eggs, you must try avoiding eggs and other products made of it. Allergies are often possible triggers of asthma attacks, which can be very dangerous.
