Every hour an American dies from melanoma. The worst part: this cancer is treatable when detected early.

Fortunately, there are many ways you can protect yourself from melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. Here are some tips:

  1. Use sunscreen year-round

Many people only use sunscreen during the summer, but exposure to UV rays at any time of the year can also cause skin cancer.

  1. Tanning beds are terrible for you

The FDA wants to put more forceful warning labels on tanning beds, because they are known causes of skin cancer.

  1. Check yourself every month

Check yourself from head to toe with both a hand- and a full-length mirror. If you find anything that looks strange, get it checked out by a doctor right away.

  1. Get screened every year

An annual skin cancer screening lets doctors track any atypical moles to make sure they aren’t cancerous.

This summer, before you hit the beach, make a commitment to your skin health. For more melanoma facts and tips, check out the IMMUNOe blog.
